MMG Cultural Centre - 2010
The imposing property, located on a busy corner in the main street of Zabbar, possesses great potential for rehabilitation. The building is to be converted into a social club and is to incorporate a number of spaces suitable for various cultural events. Proposed activities include a bar, offices, and a number of music rooms among others. The design philosophy incorporates the introduction of clean lines, plain glass and steel surfaces, and suspended lightweight materials to stand in contrast to the original elaborate stonework and thick masonry walls to be restored, together with the extensive facades. Circulation at the upper level makes use of new bridges that connect either side of the courtyard, detailed to seem as lightweight as possible and to be slotted in side walls. Natural light is allowed to filter through the entire space through the introduction of a continuous glass wall and skylight that envelopes the space with clean white mullions and clear glass.
